Vardhaman Mahavira was the twenty-fourth and last Tirthankara of the current age (kalpa) of the world who has crossed over life’s stream of rebirths and has set the example that all Jainas must follow. According to Jain philosophy, all Tirthankaras were human beings who attained perfection or enlightenment, through meditation and self-realization.
Vardhaman Mahavira Life History
Mahavira was born in B.C. in Kundagram, near Vaishali (modern day Bihar). His birthday is celebrated as Mahavir Jayanti.
- Parents: His mother was Queen Trishala, Kshatriya caste, and his father was King Siddhartha, a ruler of the Nata, or Jnatri, clan. His parents were devotees of the 23rd Tirthankara, Lord Parsvanatha.
- Mahavira belonged to the Ikshvaku dynasty.
- Spouse: His family’s prosperity increased after his birth, so he was given the name Vardhamana-augmenter. He married a princess named Yashoda. They had a daughter.
- Towards Enlightenment: At the age of thirty, he left his family, gave up his worldly possessions, and became a monk in search of a solution to eliminate pain, sorrow, and suffering.

Lord Mahavira
Lord Mahavira is the twenty-fourth Tirthankar. He was born in B.C. at Kshatriyakund which was a part of the well known Vaishali republic. His fathers name was King Siddhartha and his mothers name was Queen Trishala. They were very religious people and were followers of Lord Parshvanath. Queen Trishala had fourteen dreams (some believe sixteen dreams) when she conceived Lord Mahavira. While she was pregnant, the prosperity of King Siddhartha grew. The parents attributed their success to the baby. So when the baby was born, he was named Vardhaman, which means continuously increasing.
He was very bold and while playing he once saved his friends from a snake. Another time, a heavenly angel joined them in the disguise of a young boy. According to the rules of the game, Vardhaman had a chance to ride on the boys back. While he was riding, the boy turned into a monster in order to scare him. Vardhaman however overcame the monster. The heavenly angel then appeared in his true form. He praised Vardhaman for his boldness and called him Mahavira meaning very brave.

Vardhaman Mahavira was the 24th and last Tirthankara of Jainism. He flourished about years after the death of parsva.
He was born in Kundagrama a suburb of Vaisali (modern Muzaffarpur district in Bihar) in B.C. (according to some in B.C.).
His father Siddhartha was the head of a Kshatriyadan called the Jantrikas and his mother Trisala was a sister of Chetaka, an eminent Lichchhavi Prince and ruler of Vaisali.

He was a very learned person and received education in all branches of knowledge. He married to Yasodhara and had a daughter named Priyadarshini who was married to Jamali.
