Oscar Hammerstein II

Oscar Hammerstein II was born on July 12, in New York City. His father William was a theatre manager and, for many years, director of Hammerstein&#;s Victoria, the most popular vaudeville theatre of its day. His uncle, Arthur Hammerstein, was a successful Broadway producer and his grandfather, Oscar Hammerstein, a famous opera impresario.

Hammerstein started writing lyrics for the Columbia University Varsity shows while studying law. His earliest works included musical comedies written with a Columbia undergraduate seven years his junior named Richard Rodgers. (The varsity show, Fly With Me, was composed by Rodgers with lyrics by both Hammerstein and a fellow classmate of his named Lorenz Hart.) Withdrawing from Columbia Law School after his second year to pursue a career in theatre, Hammerstein took a job with his uncle as an assistant stage manager.

The duo of Richard Rodgers (born June 28, ) and Oscar Hammerstein II (born July 12, ) was an influential and successful Broadway theater writing team. Rodgers was the composing side of the pair, with Hammerstein as the lyricist. Their next project was Carousel, running from until Its most popular songs were the instrumental “The Carousel Waltz,” “If I Loved You” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” Rodgers and Hammerstein followed that up with the film State Fair, the only time the pair wrote a score directly for a movie. It was a success and won the duo their only Oscar, for the song “It Might as Well Be Spring.”

Rodgers and Hammerstein was a theater-writing team of composer Richard Rodgers (–) and lyricist-dramatist Oscar Hammerstein II (–), who together created a series of innovative and influential American musicals. Their popular Broadway productions in the s and s initiated what is considered the "golden age" of musical theater. Five of their Broadway shows, Oklahoma!, Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I and The Sound of Music, were outstanding successes, as was the television broadcast of Cinderella (). Of the other four shows that the team produced on Broadway during their lifetimes, Flower Drum Song was well-received, and none was an outright flop. Most of their shows have received frequent revivals around the world, both professional and amateur. Among the many accolades their shows (and film versions) garnered were thirty-four Tony Awards, fifteen Academy Awards, two Pulitzer Prizes (for Oklahoma!, , and South Pacific, ) and two Grammy Awards.

Their musical theater writing partnership has been called the greatest of the 20th century.
