Max Presneill (b. , Britsh) is an artist and curator based in Los Angeles, originally from London, UK.
A painter with works that explore mortality, existential drive, class & political sub-texts, tribalism, sub-cultural iconography and masculine identity, he has exhibited throughout the world including Los Angeles, New York, London, Amsterdam, Paris, Stockholm, Berlin, Istanbul, Sydney, Beijing, Tokyo and elsewhere, and is represented by Patrick Painter, Inc, as well as the Durden & Ray collective in Los Angeles. He is also represented by TW Fine Art in Brisbane, Australia, GCC Arte Contemporaneo in Merida, Mexico, The Farm & Distillery in Berlin and also works with ICFA in Beijing, Gallery Lara, Tokyo, S Gallery (LA and South Korea) and Shatto Gallery (LA). What is it about your studio space that inspires you?
Easy access as it is my garage at home!! I can interrupt myself for dinner without breaking up the studio day significantly :-) And, of course, I feel very much at home there..
What sounds, scents and sights do you encounter while in your studio?
The smell of oil paint. I love itsmells like victory! I always have music playing or a TV show that I can follow by listening rather than watching - which turns out is most of them :-) The sights are a space full of materials, crowded with stimulus, visually busy.
What is your favourite material to work with? How has your use of it evolved throughout your practice?
Oil paint on canvas, hands down. Everything else is just secondary.
What themes do you pursue?
Forms of masculinity in the face of an awareness of one's own death. Obligation and honor in relation to family and friendships, secret codes in male sub-cultural contexts, violence, tribalism, brotherhood.

Max Presneill is an artist whose work explores the complex relationships between images, gestures, symbols, and signs, using the painting surface as a space for mapping meaning and creating new connections. His paintings are akin to maps, locating and forming sets of relationships between disparate elements in the world—both personal and universal. Through these works, Presneill seeks to explore the freedom to choose, decide, and create meaning, framing this process as both an existential and political act.
His paintings function as dynamic, discursive formations, where historical references, autobiography, and sub-cultural motifs are woven together in a fluid, multi-layered network of meaning. These elements, often seemingly disparate or illogical, are placed in relationship with each other on the picture plane, creating a space of tension and potential. The arena of the picture plane becomes a site of conflict, where emotional states, conceptual ideas, memories, and autobiography collide, and where the notion of knowledge and understanding is constantly contested.
