He came from a prominent family, with numerous members of the aristocracy of officials in Skien, Norway. He mainly lived in Italy and Germany in his most productive years. He wrote his plays in Danish. After Ibsen’s plays began to be translated and performed, several plays of him were considered scandalous and revealing since they are not modeling the social norms and morals of family life of the 19th century.

Ibsen considered women's rights as human rights without dividing the sexes. He regarded the fundamental solution to the problems of the 19th century to be the education and acculturation of women. His ideas on the “woman question,” meaning the debate over the nature of women and their rights, is shared by intellectuals and scholars. In his speech at the Banquet of the Norwegian League for Women’s Rights, he depicted hi

From the very beginning, Hedda Gabler is portrayed as a cold and unsympathetic woman, the daughter of an aristocratic General. The role of Hedda Gabler, the female lead and title-role in Henrik Ibsen’s celebrated play Hedda Gabler, has been called ‘the female Hamlet’, because, as the Prince of Denmark is the role many male actors (and quite a few female ones) have wanted to play, so women in the world of theatre want to give their distinctive interpretation of Hedda Gabler.

Hedda Gabler is a tragedy whose plot and, in particular, characterisation demand close analysis, but before we get to those matters, here’s a brief summary of the play.

Hedda Gabler: summary

Hedda Gabler has married a rather dull academic, a cultural historian named Jørgen Tesman, but she continues to use her maiden name. At the beginning of the play, they have just returned from their long honeymoon.

Tesman appears to have a glittering academic future ahead of him, and a professorship is in the offing, especially since his rival for the position, Ejlert Løvborg, has taken himself out of the running by taking to drink. Tesman’s aunt Julie, whom he dotes on, has helped him out financially so he could set up a home for himself and his new wife.

1. Introduction

"I wanted to write a play about a woman," noted Henrik Ibsen. "That was the basic idea." The play in question was Hedda Gabler. With Hedda Gabler, Henrik Ibsen had – what he called – a conscious "break of with the old." This was the turning point for Ibsen where a woman was concerned. Hedda Gabler gives the audience a clear picture of a variety of social issues relevant to the time it was written. In May of , Hedda Gabler made its debut. This was not a particularly good time in Ibsen's life – he was not a young man, not in good health, and he was having financial trouble. Despite his challenges he had encountered, Hedda Gabler was still a sought-after play likely due to its relevance and the questions it posed, and without doubt the appeal to the audience's emotions. Hedda Gabler is a play whose author was forever trying to change the set in order to better understand the characters and tell the story. This can be proven by the opening stage direction where Ibsen notes that the main living room is "elegantly and tastefully furnished in dark colours." The couch, a central location, is likened to a throne which shows
