Medieval and Ancient
Mark's research interests include the afterlife, early Christianity in its Greco-Roman environment, Judaism, Islam, religion and art, religion, conflict and violence, politics and the modern Middle East. He also looks at the social-scientific approaches to interpreting ancient religious texts.
Mirela is also listed under Global
Mirela’s research focuses on written culture, multilingualism and cultural transmission in Byzantium and Central and Eastern Europe. She is currently working on a book entitled Inventing Slavonic: Cultures of Writing between Rome and Constantinople, which offers the first intellectual history of the earliest texts narrating the invention of the Slavonic alphabet. She is also interested in historiography and the politics of the middle ages in the modern world. To this end she is co-editing a book entitled Is Byzantine Studies a Colonialist Discipline?.
Martial's research interests range from the history of the Church in the Middle Ages and the Reformation to the history of urban societies in late medieval and Renaissance Germany and Italy.

Dr Caroline Dodds Pennock is Senior Lecturer in International History at the University of Sheffield, specializing in Mesoamerica and the Atlantic world. She is the UK’s only Aztec historian, and her first book, Bonds of Blood: Gender, Lifecycle and Sacrifice in Aztec Culture(, PB: ) won the Royal Historical Society’s Gladstone Prize for Caroline’s new book On Savage Shores: How Indigenous Americans Discovered Europe– a groundbreaking history of how Native peoples from the Americas crossed the Atlantic and transformed the world after – will be published in January

I am a historian specialising in Indigenous American, especially Aztec, history and the early modern Atlantic world, with a particular interest in issues of gender, human sacrifice, migration and cultural exchange.

I have been at Sheffield since , and am probably best known as the only British Aztec historian, though my current research has branched out across the Atlantic, bringing Indigenous histories into a global framework.
I have just published a major trade book, On Savage Shores: How Indigenous Americans Discovered Europe, telling the stories of the Indigenous Americans who ‘discovered’ Europe in the sixteenth century. The story of these Indigenous Americans abroad is a story of abduction, loss, cultural appropriation, and, as they saw it, of apocalypse - a story that has largely been absent from our collective imagination of the times.
As well as pestering people on twitter @carolinepennock, I also work as a popular history writer, consultant, and ‘talking head’ expert for TV and radio, having appeared on programmes for broadcasters including the BBC, Channel 4, Sky, the Smithsonian Channel and Netflix.
