A curator and arts administrator, Tasneem Zakaria Mehta is the current honorary director and managing trustee of the Bhau Daji Lad Museum.
Mehta studied English literature at Delhi University, followed by a fine arts degree from Sir JJ School of Art, Mumbai, and a Master’s in liberal arts from Columbia University, New York. She joined the Bhau Daji Lad Museum in In this role, she was responsible for the refurbishment and revival of the museum, which received the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award of Excellence for Conservation in Mehta also instituted the Modern & Contemporary Indian Art and Curatorial Studies post-graduate diploma course at the museum.
She is on the advisory board of the National Gallery of Modern Art and the Governing Council of National Institute of Design (NID), as well as a trustee of the Kochi Biennale Foundation. She was also a member of the Museum Expert Committee, Ministry of Culture, and the Academic Council of the National Museum Institute. Additionally, she has served as a board member of the Salar Jung Museum and vice-chairperson of the Indian National Trust of Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH).

Right at the centre of the busy Byculla district stands one of the city’s great treasures — Mumbai’s first museum, a Palladian building with Victorian pillars, established in Conceived by its first curator George Birdwood in the 19th century, Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum (previously known as the Victoria and Albert Museum) highlights the city’s cultural heritage and history through a rare collection of fine and decorative arts. For nearly seven decades though, the building and its many objects — clay models, dioramas, maps, lithographs, photographs, rare books — lay in a derelict state.
One would reckon BDL’s revival since its comprehensive restoration, which began in February would be its honorary director and managing trustee Tasneem Zakaria Mehta’s greatest achievement. But Zakaria Mehta, also vice-chairperson of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), says, “The museum has been one of my biggest blessings. For me, it wasn’t just about restoration, it was about revitalising the space.”

Tasneem Zakaria Mehta is an art historian, curator, designer, conservationist, and cultural activist. She is the Managing Trustee and Director of Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum, Mumbai and former Vice Chairman and Mumbai Convenor of INTACH. She has successfully pioneered the revival and restoration of several cultural sites in Mumbai. She conceptualized, curated, designed and implemented the restoration and revitalization of the Museum, which won UNESCO’s Asia Pacific Award of Excellence for Cultural Restoration. She has written and edited several articles and books on art and culture. Her latest book – ‘Mumbai- A City Through Objects’, stories from the Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum was co-published by Harper Design and released in May to mark the Museum’s th Anniversary, has won several awards including Art Book of the Year.
