Sera Khandro

Sera Khandro Dewé Dorje (Tib. སེ་ར་མཁའ་འགྲོ་བདེ་བའི་རྡོ་རྗེ་, Wyl.se ra mkha' 'gro bde ba'i rdo rje) aka Kunzang Dekyong Wangmo (ཀུན་བཟང་བདེ་སྐྱོང་དབང་མོ་, Wyl.kun bzang bde skyong dbang mo) () — a great female tertön whose treasure texts are revered by many great Nyingma masters. She was the consort of Tulku Trimé Özer, one of the sons of the illustrious Tertön Dudjom Lingpa. She was also one of the root gurus of Chatral Rinpoche and was reborn as his daughter, Saraswati (recognised by Karmapa Rangjung Rigpé Dorje).

Another incarnation, recognised by Dudjom Rinpoche, was Tare Lhamo.

    An early 20th century, female spiritual teacher with a connection to Awo Sera Monastery
    Throughout centuries of Buddhist development in Tibet, the majority of spiritual masters have been male, but some women did reach high levels of realization, becoming accomplished practitioners and important teachers. One of the greatest we know about was Sera Khandro. She was born in Lhasa in but at the age of sixteen, after experiencing powerful visions, she escaped from her upper class life in Lhasa and traveled to Golok, high on the plateau of eastern Tibet.
    She spent the rest of her life in Golok and despite encountering tremendous obstacles and difficulties, she persisted in her practice and became a powerful spiritual teacher with many disciples. A renowned Treasure revealer, an especially unusual role for a woman, she taught not only her own Treasure teachings but also those of others including her guru and consort, Drimé Özer.

    The treasure revealer Sera Khandro was the most prolific female author in Tibetan history. Considered an incarnation of Yeshe Tsogyel, her main treasure revelations are The Secret Treasury of Reality Ḍākinīs and The Ḍākinīs’ Heart Essence. She also wrote her own autobiography, a commentary on Dudjom Lingpa’s Buddhahood Without Meditation and a biography of her main consort, Drime Ozer.
