È la prima volta che l’artista egiziana Ghada Amer espone le proprie opere in Europa. E ad accoglierla non poteva essere che la città francomediterranea di Marsiglia.
Nata nel al Cairo, Ghada Amer ha studiato arti plastiche alla scuola Villa Arson di Nizza, dove si è vista negare l&#;accesso al corso di pittura in quanto donna, con la scusa delle scarsissime possibilità che avrebbe successivamente avuto per fare carriera nell’ambito artistico. Trasferitasi prima a Parigi e poi a New York, sarebbe rimasta per sempre segnata dalla discriminazione subita. L’assenza delle figure femminili (usate al massimo come modelle) nell’arte, non solo mediorientale ma anche occidentale, porta l’artista alla consapevolezza di dover sfatare alcuni tabù.
La sua mostra è divisa in tre sezioni e dislocata in altrettanti edifici.
La prima parte si trova nella cappella centrale del museo della Vieille Charité.

아메르는 캔버스에 수를 놓은 자수 회화에서부터 정원과 같은 대규모의 식물설치 프로젝트에 이르기까지 다양한 매체의 작업을 발표해왔다. 특히, 대담한 페미니즘적 함축을 묘사하는 작가의 자수 회화는 여성과 여성에 관련된 고정관념, 섹슈얼리티에 대한 주된 관심을 드러낸다. 년부터 포르노 잡지에서 발췌한 여성의 이미지를 사용한 회화는, 남성은 에로틱한 시선의 주체이고 여성은 그 대상일 뿐이라는 미학적 전통을 거부한다. “모든 여성은 그들의 몸을 좋아해야 하고 유혹의 도구로 사용해야 한다”고 강조하는 작가는 여성의 신체적 유혹이 금기시되는 일부 페미니즘 이론에도 동의하지 않는다. 년 부산비엔날레에 초청된 작가는 <Women’s Qualities>라는 정원 프로젝트를 발표하여 ‘여성들의 갖추어야 할 자질’에 대한 시민들의 대답을 한글 도안 그대로 광장에 심었다. ‘순결한’, ‘흰 피부’, ‘가슴 큰’, ‘순종적인’, ‘덕 있는’ 등으로 이어지는 형용사들은 여성에 대한 당시의 인식을 반영한다. 작가는 년 이집트 민주화 혁명 당시, 진압 경찰의 발길질에 쓰러진 한 여성의 파란 브래지어가 드러나는 장면을 목격한 뒤 <Blue Bra Girls> 연작을 발표
Ghada Amer was born in Cairo, Egypt in and moved to Nice, France when she was eleven years old. She remained in France to further her education and completed both of her undergraduate requirements and MFA at Villa Arson École Nationale Supérieure in Nice (), during which she also studied abroad at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts in In she moved to Paris to complete a post-diploma at the Institut des Hautes Études en Arts Plastiques. Following early recognition in France, she was invited to the United States in for a residency at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She has since then been based in New York.

“I want to be known as a British male artist or an American white male artist, because they get a lot of attention,” the Egyptian-born artist Ghada Amer says in Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath’s recent book Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring: Conversations with Arab Artists. “They don’t have shows like ‘Women Artists in the 21st Century.’”
Amer is known for her equally wry and provocative embroidered paintings, which rework pornographic source material to address the oppression of women and explore female sexuality from a feminist angle. In the past few years she has moved from painting into sculpture, experimenting with bronze and, most recently, ceramics—an increasingly popular medium and one that, like embroidery, that has long been associated with craft and female labor. Some of these new works look like details taken from Amer’s paintings; women gaze seductively at the viewer, smoke, kiss, caress, or masturbate.
