- Father Lucas Trevant: The interesting thing about skeptics, atheists, is that, uh, we're always looking for proof, certainty. The question is what on Earth would we do if we found it?
- Michael Kovak: "We?"
- Father Lucas Trevant: Oh, yes. There are times when I experience a total loss of faith - days, months when I don't know what the hell I believe in - God or the devil, Santa Claus or Tinker Bell - but, uh you know, I'm just a man. I'm a weak man. I have no power, yet there's something that keeps digging and scraping away inside me. Feel's like God's fingernail - and, uh, finally I can take no more of the pain, and I get shoved out from the darkness back into the light. Something like that.
- Father Lucas Trevant: Tell me does a thief or a burglar turn on the lights while he's robbing your house? No. He prefers you to believe that, uh he's not there. Uh, like the devil, he prefers you to believe that he doesn't exist.
- Michael Kovak: Gets complicated when no proof of the devil is somehow proof of the devil.
- Father Lucas Trevant: Yeah.
- Father Lucas Trevant: The terror is real, Michael. It's real, but you
The Rite
Movie Review
In , the Vatican announced a new initiative to educate clergy in the rite of exorcism. With the Church receiving an estimated half-million exorcism requests annually, Roman Catholic officials stated they wanted priests in every diocese trained to expel demons. Matt Baglio, a reporter in Rome, was intrigued by the announcement and spent time with an American priest undergoing this training. The result was his nonfiction book The Rite: The Making of a Modern Exorcist. And The Rite, in turn, is a cinematic fictionalization inspired by [the] true events Baglio wrote about.
This intense spiritual thriller revolves around two dramatically different characters. Michael Kovak is a seminarian on the verge of taking his priestly vows … or dropping out due to doubts about Gods existence. Father Lucas, in contrast, is a veteran—and unconventional—Italian exorcist. Their paths cross when Michaels priest suggests that he spend a few months in Rome participating in the Churchs new training class for exorcists, which he hopes will allay Michaels spiritual questions.
Father Lucas immediately invites Michael to witness an attempted exorcism of Ro
'The Rite' Gets It All Wrong
In Mikael Håfström’s “The Rite,” a troubled young seminarian named Michael Kovak (Colin O’Donoghue) travels to Italy and turns to the practice of exorcism under the tutelage of the renegade Father Lucas Trevant (Anthony Hopkins). The film is based on the book “The Rite: The Making of a Modern Exorcist” by journalist Matt Baglio, who shadowed an American Catholic priest in Rome as he took a course at a Vatican-affiliated university in order to become an exorcist. The book, and by extension the film, was intended to challenge the negative stereotypes about exorcism created and perpetuated by contemporary culture and cinema. Ironically, because the film constantly falls back upon horror clichés—enlivened but emphasized by genre master Anthony Hopkins’s participation—it accomplishes the exact opposite, reinforcing the very perceptions the film was intended to combat.
Like many overwrought horror movies, “The Rite” relies on redundant visual cues to signal the psychological mood. There are only two lighting schemes: dark and darker. Even Rome, one of the most colorful cities of the world, becomes overcast and stormy shortly after Michael’s arr

The Rite takes exorcism more seriously than I expected it to. It begins with the supposition that Satan is “alive and active in the world” and assumes that satanic possession takes place and that the rite of exorcism works. Otherwise, we wouldnt have a movie, would we? In metaphysical terms, I must immediately jump on the word “alive.” In what sense can a being that exists outside of time and space be said to be alive? Active, yes.
The movie is based on the actual experiences of Father Gary Thomas, a California priest who was assigned by his bishop to study exorcism at the Vatican. In The Rite, he becomes Father Michael Kovak (Colin O'Donoghue) from Chicago, and the closing credits tell us hes now working in a Western suburb. Thats a fib. The director, Mikael Hafstrom, should say three “Hail Marys” and make a good act of contrition.
Father Michael is not a saint. He enters the seminary as a way to get a four-year college education before taking his vows, and then tries to leave the novitiate. Discovering the cost of his education would then roll over into a $, student loan, he reconsiders and agrees to attend a month
