As of , there isn’t much information available in English about German architectural photographer Karl Hugo Schmölz. I couldn’t find a book translated nor a Wikipedia entry (although there is one in German), no articles from English scholars, and very few references came out through a search in Google Books. From September 6th to November 2nd, , Galerie Hilaneh von Kories will present a selection of 50 photographs by Walde Huth.
The Cologne-based photographer () is primarily known for her fashion shots from the 50‘s. Besides Huth‘s signature works, the gallery shows rarely seen treasures from the photographer‘s archive: still and advertising photos have been selected together with portraits of famous contemporaries, the dancer Harald Kreutzberg, the author Ernst Juenger and the artist Hanspeter Fitz, a close friend, among them.
Walde Huth was an exceptional woman as well as a creative artist and multi-faceted photographer. Full of imagination and energy, headstrong and spontaneous, poetic and insistent, her work is blessed by an infallible sense for staging, perfect light and graphic composition of the image. Austere objects, emphatic portraits and playful fashion shots know to capture the eye of the observer.

Museum Ludwig: Eine Entdeckung
Kennen Sie Walde Huth? Nein? Dann wird es Zeit, ins Museum Ludwig in Köln zu gehen, dort läuft vom September bis 3. März 2o24 eine große Ausstellung über die Stuttgarterin. Die deutsche Fotografin, die von bis lebte, wurde bekannt mit Modeaufnahmen der Haute Couture der 50er und 60er für Modezeitschriften, lichtete die neuen Kollektionen von Christian Dior oder Jacques Fath ab.
Huths Innovation bestand darin, die Aufnahmen der Star-Models im Freien zu machen, in der Stadt, und im Kontrast zur umgebenden Architektur. Auch lächeln Huths Models nicht, wie es davor der Fall war. Sie sehen selbstbewusst, modern und stilsicher aus. Außerdem machte Huth Werbeaufnahmen für Strumpfhersteller (siehe oben) und Möbel. Ab den 70ern schuf sie freie, abstrakte Themen.

Der Rat der Stadt Köln hat in seiner Sitzung am Mai die Schenkung eines Konvoluts von rund Fotografien von Walde Huth und eines monumentalen Werks von Wade Guyton dankend angenommen.

Walde Huth ( bis ) machte sich ab den er Jahren international einen Namen als Modefotografin der Haute Couture in Paris, Florenz und auch in Deutschland. Ikonische Modeaufnahmen für Dior und andere fehlen heute in keiner Rückschau zur Mode und Modefotografie der zweiten Hälfte des Jahrhunderts.
Walde Huth war mit dem Fotografen Karl Hugo Schmölz verheiratet und betrieb mit ihm von bis in die er Jahre gemeinsam das Atelier Schmölz + Huth in Köln. Dank einer großzügigen Schenkung im Jahr konnte das Museum Ludwig seinen Bestand an Werken der Kölner Fotografen Hugo Schmölz ( bis ) und Karl Hugo Schmölz ( bis ) bereits substantiell erweitern.
