Biography
Efua Sutherland devoted her career to promoting African art forms. Along with her work as a teacher and radio broadcaster, this Ghanaian intellectual wrote short stories, plays, and poems; she also led the way in creating numerous organizations and projects to develop African writing and African theater. The future writer was born Efua Theodora on June 27, , at Cape Coast, a coastal town in the British colony of the Gold Coast.
The young girl obtained her education on two continents. After graduating from St. Monica's School and Training College at Mampong in the Ashanti region of the Gold Coast, she continued her studies in England. One of the first African women to attend Cambridge University, she studied there at Homerton College and took a B.A. degree; she continued her education abroad at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London.
As a literary pioneer, the young teacher struck off in an even more novel direction in developing a theatrical movement in her native country. A pioneer in establishing post-independence cultural institutions, she founded the Ghana Society of Writers, the Ghana Experimental Theatre, and the Ghana Drama Studio. She was an influential cultural advocate for children from the early s until her death and played a major role in developing educational curricula, literature, theatre and film for and about Ghanaian children. Efua Theodora Sutherland (born 27 June � 2 January )[1] was a Ghanaian playwright, director, dramatist, children's author, poet, educationalist, researcher, child advocate, and cultural activist. Her works include the plays Foriwa (),[2] Edufa (),[3] and The Marriage of Anansewa ().[4][5] She founded the Ghana Drama Studio,[6] the Ghana Society of Writers,[7] the Ghana Experimental Theatre, and a community project called the Kodzidan (Story House).[8] As the earliest Ghanaian playwright-director[9] she was an influential figure in the development of modern Ghanaian theatre, and helped to introduce the study of African performance traditions at the university level.[10] She was also a pioneering African publisher, establishing the company Afram Publications in Accra in the s.[11]

Efua T Sutherlandis a fabled name in her native Ghana, and in Africa after her extraordinary contributions to the Theatre, and general Literature, in the last century. Sutherland was well educated in her youth, and returned home from overseas to become something of a phenomenal literary pioneer in Ghana.
