Page 1 of 5 A SHORT BIOGRAPHY OF THE FIRST LUTHERAN MISSIONARY IN INDIA, BARTHOLOMAEUS ZIEGENBALG MOHANAVELU SUNDARAMOORTHY Bartholomaeus Ziegenbalg ( – ), the first German Lutheran missionary in India and a pioneer bridge builder, between Germany and India, had been the subject for many discussions, dialogues and discourses for a very long period of over years, because, his career and achievements, in the face of stiff competitions, rivalry, legal and diplomatic hindrances, from many quarters, had been quite remarkable. During his pathetic short life span, he could gain many laurels and luminous feathers not only for himself; but also to the Lutheran Church – his very bread, passion and mission. Soaked in acute pathos and webbed into a net of sorrow, declining supple health, disappointment and perennial resistances from many sides, had been the sad biography of this pioneer German missionary. Bartholomaeus Ziegenbalg was born at Pulsnitz in Saxony on , studied at Halle, was ordained at Copenhagen and arrived in Tranquebar with a fellow German missionary named Heinrich Pluetschau on Even with
Bartholomaus Ziegenbalg, was the father of Modern Protestant Mission and the first Protestant missionary to India, born on 10th July, , at the village of Pulsnitz, Saxony, Germany. His Parents Bartholomaus Ziegenbalg Sr (), a grain merchant and Catharin () were a poor and devout Christians. He showed an aptitude for music at an early age. He studied at the University of Halle under the teaching of e, then the center of Pietistic Lutheranism. Under the patronage of Frederick IV of Denmark, Ziegenbalg along with his fellow student, Heinrich Plutschau, answered the call of King for clergy who would spread the Gospel in India and they became the first Protestant missionaries to India. Ziegenbalg was practicing a well-intentioned form of cultural imperialism. But due to the circumstances in which European culture was established and promoted, in the midst of indigenous, alien people, the bridge estran
Bartholomaeus Ziegenbalg was born on July 10, , in Pulsnitz, about 20 km north east of Dresden. His father Bartholomäus Ziegenbalg Sr. was a farmer turned grain merchant, and his mother Maria née Brückner was a pious woman who brought him and his two sisters up in the teaching of the Bible. She died when he was ten years old, and his father when he was twelve. On her deathbed, his mother said to her children “My dear children! Search for the wealth in the Bible.”
After his parents died, Ziegenbalg grew up in his elder sister, Anna Huhlin’s house. She put him in a school at Kamenz, followed by high school at Gorlitz. It was here, when he was sixteen, that a fellow music student impressed on Ziegenbalg the significance of the necessity for harmony between himself and his Creator. Ziegenbalg responded, and made a life-changing conversion. April was Ziegenbalg’s last year at Gorlitz.
To gain mastery in European classical languages such as Greek, Hebrew, and Latin, before enrolling to study theology, Ziegenbalg continued his education at a school in Friedrichswerder in Berlin, where Joachim Lange served as rector. His studies in Berlin would have to be cut short due to an i

Department: Hagiography Author: Christopher Gilbert Title: St. Bartholomäus Ziegenbalg, the Morningstar of India When a nation like India institutes a whole week of remembrance to celebrate the life of a foreign resident three hundred years after his arrival, it ought to make us wonder, “What on earth for?” And when a native of that same country spends sixteen years researching the life of that same foreigner, and then dubs him “the Morningstar of India,” we should stop and ask, “Who is this person, and why such astonishing applause?” It will no doubt surprise many to learn that the remarkable foreigner in question was a Lutheran missionary, Bartholomäus Ziegenbalg. Attentive Lutherans might have made note of his name on the commemoration calendar (November 7), but the memory of his life and work has been kept alive mostly within academic missiology. Still, for three centuries, the voluminous records of this German Lutheran Pietist and missionary appointee of the Danish king, Frederik IV, lay neglected in the archives of the Francke Foundation in Halle, Germany. But no more! Daniel Jeyaraj, a Lutheran pastor and scholar from Ind
