Early Career
Tiesto developed an interest in music at the age of During his school years, he used to perform at parties. After that, he began professionally DJing, in various clubs. In he began releasing material and was soon discovered by Basic Beat. In , Tiesto and his friend Arny Bink, founded their own label, Black Hole Recordings. Through his label, the DJ released theMagik series. Furthermore, his popularity increased after performing at the first ID&T Innercity party.
Breakthrough
Next up, he began collaborating with another Dutch DJ, thus forming the trance duo Gouryella. Together, they experience massive success, reaching international charts. Shortly after, he released his first compilation, Summerbreeze, which peaked at number three on the Billboard dance chart. It included an iconic remix of Delerium&#;s Silence, featuring Sarah McLachlan.

– Early years
Tijs Verwest had an interest for music since the age of twelve. When he was twenty he decided to dedicate more time to it and began DJing professionally at school parties and then moved on to become a resident DJ between and at several clubs in the Netherlands after his manager and friend Wilfred encouraged him. During these years, he produced hardcore/gabber tracks under aliases such as Da Joker and DJ Limited. However, it was at The Spock (closed in ), a small club in Breda that was embedded in the Graanbeurs nightclub, where he was able to fine-tune his own style by playing in a separate room from 10 p.m. until 4 a.m. on weekends. In the beginning of his career as DJ he mostly played new beat and acid house, and many Madonna songs because her music shows that she likes to dance. Before the release of her album there were already dancemixes like &#;Vogue&#; which was one of the songs of Spock. He was discovered by the general manager of Rotterdam-based Basic Beat Recordings. Tiësto released his first of five mix CDs as a part of the label&#;s Forbidden Paradise series.

Tijs Michiel Verwest, alias DJ Tiësto, was born on the 17th of January in Breda (Holland). He started spinning records when he was 14 years old. At the age of 15, he made mixtapes with the best tunes of the month, and gave them to friends and clothing stores. A year later he had bought his own mobile and played at small student parties. The next step was a Dutch club called 'De Lente'. There, Tiësto entertained the crowd with disco, hip hop and early housemusic.
When he was 21 years old, he started playing in 'The Spock', where only housemusic was played every thursday-, friday- and saturdaynight, and at the age of 22 he also mixed for 'Channel X', an illegal radio station that broadcasted house music 24 hours a day and that was very popular especially in Holland and Belgium. Tiësto also played in a famous afterclub in Amsterdam that year, called the 'Voodoo Club'.
