Tomás de Torquemada was a Spanish Dominican minister and the primary Grand Inquisitor in Spain's development to homogenize prominent religious practice with Catholic universality in the late fifteenth century, also called "The Spanish Inquisition".

He was born about at Torquemada near Valladolid, the nephew of Cardinal Juan de Torquemada and possibly of Jewish extraction. Tomas De Torquemada served as a cleric before being named as Inquisitor General by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabel in , amid the Spanish Inquisition.

He originated from a group of conversos (proselytes from Judaism). His father was Don Pedro Ferdinando, master of Torquemada. Tomás de Torquemada says that his grandparents were of the heredity of the Jews changed over to our Holy Catholic confidence.

Biography

The name of Tomás de Torquemada will be forever notorious, associated with cruelty, injustice and intolerance, because of his preponderant role in the Holy Inquisition from the years as Grand Inquisitor of Spain.

He was born in , possibly in the town from which his name is derived, Torquemada, Crown of Castile, in present-day Palencia in the Autonomous Community of Castile and León. [1] The name of the town came from the Romans – Turris Cremata – or Burned Tower, [2] oddly foreshadowing the history that would unfold the last quarter of the 15th century with the onset of the Spanish Inquisition on 01 Nov [3] and the Alhambra decree of 31 March [4] Tomás died on 16 Sep in Ávila, Crown of Castile, in present-day Ávila in the Autonomous Community of Castile and León. [1] He was buried at the Real Monasterio of Santo Tomás in Ávila, [5] which he had built, thanks to the donations of his patrons Hernán Núñez-María Dávila, and of the Catholic Monarchs [1] but in , two years after the Inquisition was disbanded, the tomb was ransacked, and the bones allegedly stolen and burned in a ritual auto-da-fé. First Grand Inquisitor of Spain, born at Valladolid in ; died at Avila, 16 September, He was a nephew of the celebrated theologian and cardinal, Juan de Torquemada. In his early youth he entered the Dominicanmonastery at Valladolid, and later was appointed prior of the Monastery of Santa Cruz at Segovia, an office which he held for twenty-two years. The Infanta Isabella chose him as her confessor while at Segovia, and when she succeeded to the throne of Castile in he became one of her most trusted and influential councillors, but refused all high ecclesiastical preferments, choosing to remain a simple friar.

At that time the purity of the CatholicFaith in Spain was in great danger from the numerous Marranos and Moriscos, who, for material considerations, became sham converts from Judaism and Mohammedanism to Christianity. The irony of his Jewish ancestry is that during his tenure as Inquisitor General, many Jews would meet untimely deaths in the hands of his Inquisition.

 

Tomas was born in Valladolid, Spain in His uncle Cardinal Juan de Torquemada was a respected theologian, a fact which helped Tomas' career. Tomas was an ascetic priest who, during his early years, had been a Dominican monk and cook. He later rose to the position of Prior at the Monastery of Santa Cruz in Segovia; a position he held till at the age of 63 he was appointed Grand Inquisitor of the Spanish Inquisition.
