Saxton Freyman

Saxton Freyman received his first jacknife on his eighth birthday, which he used right away to carve his very first pumpkin. Years later, he used that same knife to create many of the characters in Play With Your Food, this time with fewer injuries!

It was through Mia that Sax learned about Joost Elfer's idea of doing a book on carving veggies. Together, they immediately began working on Play With Your Food and Play With Your Pumpkin.

Joost Elffers began creating books in the early 's. Since then he has come up with really fun books full of imagination, like Oragami, Cat's Cradle, and Anamorphoses and the Games of Perspective. In , he created his first fruit characters in Die Radieschen Maus im Kaseloch.

Since Joost is a foreigner, he was not too familiar with the Halloween tradition of carving out jack-o-lanterns. He was surprised to see that Americans never noticed the cute nose pumpkins already have-their stem. With his friend, Saxton Freymann, he started the book Play With Your Food.

Saxton Freymann’s unique use of food sculpture and photography make for memorable, creative, and silly illustrations.  Coupled with short sentences of text or idioms, which often rhyme, Freymann’s books have been a favorite of Misty’s since she was first introduced to them in her Children’s Literature class in college.  She owns almost all of his books and highly recommends them all!

Fun fact: Freymann’s illustrations are reminiscent of those of Israeli author and illustrator- Hanoch Piven who visited FJECC this past month and inspired families, children, and educators to “look for the faces” in various found objects, just as Freymann does with his medium of produce!

Saxton Freymann is a New York artist who creates emotional animals completely out of produce. His art career began in painting, until when he paired up with publisher Joost Elfers. Freymann supplied Joost's need for "someone who could carve food beyond the rose radish table garnish". Freymann tried carving animals and discovered his new talent. By using an exacto knife, he turns bananas into octopi, a pear into a bear, or oranges expressing a variety of moods. He uses peppercorns or black-eyed peas for eyes, and beet juice or kernal corn for teeth. His inspiration comes from the produce aisle. He claims each vegetable or fruit already has its own personality.
