Published here is the first half of the Royal Irish Academy’s edition of the extant, unpublished lexicographical work written and compiled between and by the writer, scholar and activist Máirtín Ó Cadhain ().
Máirtín Ó Cadhain undertook the compilation of this dictionary of Irish as used in his native Galway at the request of the Department of Education, and by had sent the first samples of his work which were intended, with similar material commissioned from other dialects, to form a basis for a large-scale Irish-English Dictionary; Foclóir Gaeilge-Béarla, edited by Niall Ó Dónaill, was published in
Ó Cadhain continued to send material in the following years, eventually ceasing in , by which time he was well on the way to becoming one of the finest exponents of creative writing in Ireland in the 20th century. His groundbreaking novel, Cré na Cille, composed almost entirely in the common speech of his native Connemara, appeared in , giving an enduring platform for his creative talent. Cré na Cille is now available in over a dozen languages.

Beginnings
Máirtín Ó Cadhain was born in in An Cnocán Glas, a few hundred yards west of Spiddal. He trained as a teacher during Both his mother Bríd Ní Chonfhaola and his father Séan Ó Cadhain were traditional storytellers, as well as many of his relatives. A brilliant linguist, he was fluent in Russian, Spanish as well as Irish, English, German and French. Nowadays Máirtín Ó Cadhain is remembered mainly for his writing.
The Author
His first published work ”Idir Shugradh agus Dairire” appeared in ; this was followed by An Braon Broghach () and Cois Caolaoire (), these books were short stories. He also wrote some novels such as Cre na Cille (), Aithnuachan and other books. He won the Butler Award of the Irish American Cultural Institute. Before his death he had another book published: Paipear Bhana Paipear Bhreaca (). He claimed that he had three times as much written as what was published.

Besides his teaching responsibilities at undergraduate and postgraduate level, Máirtín has published widely on nineteenth and twentieth-century Irish nationalism, local and regional Irish labour history and the Irish in Scotland. His monograph study into the Fenian movement in Scotland, Irish Republicanism in Scotland, (Dublin: Irish Academic Press, ), has been followed by numerous journal articles and book chapters.
Máirtín began his postdoctoral work at the Magee College campus of Ulster University where he worked for two research institutes, the Institute of Ulster Scots Studies and the Academy of Irish Cultural Heritages, collaborating on a number of history, heritage and diaspora projects between and Soon after, he joined the University of Central Lancashire as a lecturer in modern Irish and European history. From time to time, he worked externally with the Ulster People’s College on a range of oral history projects and with numerous community groups on heritage and reconciliation initiatives.
