Crysis, Ryse: Son of Rome composer joins Divinity: Original Sin 2 team

It came as sad and surprising news last summer when Larian Studios announced that Divinity composer Kirill Pokrovsky had died. Pokrovsky had created memorable music for all of Larian's games, going all the way back to LED Wars in , and became a Larian “face” through his livestreamed mini-concerts in support of Divinity: Original Sin. He left, as they say, very big shoes to fill.

Stepping into them, Larian announced today in a Kickstarter update, will be Borislav “Bobby” Slavov, formerly of Crytek, whose recent credits include Ryse: Son of Rome, and Crysis 2 and 3. “While no one can truly replace him, the search for a successor to compose the music for Divinity: Original Sin 2 has come to a fantastic conclusion,” Crytek said. “[Bobby] first caught the attention of Larian Studios with his talent for creating adaptive music that evolves with players' actions, and his plans for Divinity: Original Sin 2 are impressive, to say the least.”

Kirill at the age of five Kirill Pokrovsky was born in Moscow, the capital of the Soviet-Union. Kirill's musical career began at the tender age of five when he took his first music lessons from his mother, an instructor and accomplished pianist. From that moment on music would determine Kirill's entire life. Pokrovsky continued his studies at the Music School, where he learned to play the piano, the oboe and the saxophone. Then he started creating his first compositions.

To develop his creativity he enrolled in Moscow's conservatory, where he concentrated on music theory and composition. During the conservatories period Pokrovsky worked on his compositions, participated in different projects and bands. He embarked on diverse projects for film, television, radio, theatre etc. Never accepting the traditional barriers as a 'classical composer', Pokrovsky gained quite some success in jazz, rock, pop and other genres. Divinity: Original Sin Composer Passes Away

Even in times of great success, tragedy can still strike. Such was the case when it was revealed that Kirill Pokrovsky, a Russian-Belgian composer who created the soundtrack for Larian Studios&#; Divinity: Original Sin, passed away at the age of 53 years on June 1st. The cause of his passing has not been revealed.

Posting on Kickstarter, Larian Studios stated that Pokrovsky was, “A great man, a fantastic composer and a good friend passed away yesterday. Rest in peace Kirill Pokrovsky – we will miss you. We’ve all hummed your music and we have marvelled at how far your virtuosity went. You were truly somebody unique, a true artist, and we were very lucky to have you as a colleague.”

Besides Original Sin, Pokrovsky also worked on composing for the entire Divinity series along with several solo albums. Pokrovsky&#;s passing will be mourned but his work and the mark he&#;s left on this industry will never be forgotten.
