Janet Elizabeth Lane-Claypon, Lady Forber (3 February – 17 July ) was an English physician. She was one of the founders of the science of epidemiology, pioneering the use of cohort studies and case-control studies.[3]
Early life and education
Lane-Claypon was born Janet Elizabeth Claypon in into an affluent family, in Boston, Lincolnshire, the daughter of William Ward Lane-Claypon, a banker and former first-class cricketer, and Edith (née Stow). Her uncle C. G. Lane was also a first-class cricketer.[4] A few weeks after her birth, her father changed the family name to Lane-Claypon by royal license.
She was privately educated and entered the London School of Medicine for Women in , winning numerous honors and fellowships. During her training, the British Medical Society awarded Lane-Claypon a research scholarship—the first time it had ever bestowed the honor on a woman.[5] She earned both an MD and DSc[2] (making her an early example of the "Doctor-doctor" phenomenon).[6]

Another female British pioneer in epidemiology, who has been largely overlooked despite her seminal contribution, is the inventor of the modern case-control study. Lane-Claypon, like Nightingale, was a public-health leader who became an innovator in epidemiology in pursuit of her public-health objectives. In , she published the results of a study that examined breast feeding versus bottle feeding in relation to weight gain during infancy and secondarily compared the effect of boiled versus raw cow's milk among the bottle-fed infants. This study has been described as the first retrospective cohort study,16 although one could argue that the earlier studies of Snow on cholera or of Semmelweiss on puerperal fever were retrospective cohort studies.
