Born at Cotton of West Hills, Carmyllie, Arbroath, the eldest son of John Lindsay, tailor, and his wife, Elizabeth Bowman.

Spent time abroad teaching
settled in Dundee and resumed his science classes, demonstrating his enthusiasm for the possible uses of electricity, including telegraphy and power from batteries.
Claimed to have developed a continuously burning electric light but the details are unclear.
Appointed as a teacher in Dundee prison, a post he held until
he sent a proposal to the Dundee Advertiser for an autograph telegraph, which used vibrating needles to etch messages into pith balls. In response to the suggestion of a submarine Atlantic telegraph cable, Lindsay responded with ideas of how a cable might be constructed, using uninsulated copper wire with joints welded by electricity. Biography
James was born on 8 Sep at the Cotton of Westhills, Carmyllie son to John Lindsay and Elizabeth Bowman. [1]
He attended school at Carmyllie. He was a Scottish inventor and author. He is credited with early developments in several fields, such as incandescent lighting and wireless telegraphy.[2]
He died without issue. James Lindsay was buried in the Western Cemetery, Dundee. [3]

LINDSAY, JAMES BOWMAN (–), electrician and philologist, was born at Carmyllie, Forfarshire, on 8 Sept. But for the delicacy of his constitution he would have been a farmer, like his father, who apprenticed him to a local hand-loom weaver. From an early age he displayed a taste for study, and matriculated at St. Andrews University in October , working at his trade during the recess, and earning some money by private tuition. Having finished his arts course he entered on the study of theology and completed his curriculum, but was never licensed as a preacher. He had gained special honours in mathematics and physical science, and in he was appointed lecturer on these subjects at the Watt Institution, Dundee, and organised classes in electricity and magnetism. In a fragment of autobiography, preserved in the Dundee Museum, he states that on Oersted's discovery of the deflection of the magnetic needle by an electric current in he 'had a clear view of the application of electricity to telegraphic communication.'
