I was born in New York City in the borough of the Bronx on January 6, I attended public schools in Far Rockaway Queens. After graduating Far Rockaway High School, I first attended Syracuse University from to and then transferred to the University of Chicago, where I obtained a BA in history in , an MA in and a PhD in with a major in history and a minor in anthropology. I taught Latin American history at the University of Chicago from to , rising from lecturer to the rank of associate professor with tenure. I then taught at Columbia University from to , being named the Gouverneur Morris Professor of History in I retired from Columbia in and was named professor of history and director of the Center for Latin American Studies at Stanford University from to After my retirement as director, I was named research fellow and curator of Latin American Collection, of the Hoover Institution of Stanford University in –

Interests and Research

Herbert S. Klein, Gouveneur Morris Professor Emeritus of History, specializes in the social, demographic, and economic history of Latin America. He received his B.A. from the University of Chicago in and his Ph.D. from Chicago in He is the author of some 20 books and articles in several languages on Latin America and on comparative themes in social and economic history. Among these books are four comparative studies of slavery, the most recent of which are African Slavery in Latin America and the Caribbean (, 2d ed. Co-authored, ), The Atlantic Slave Trade (, 2d ed ), and Slavery and the Economy of São Paulo, (co-author) (), and Slavery in Brazil (co-author, ) as well as four books on Bolivian history, the latest of which is Haciendas and Ayllus: Rural Society in the Bolivian Andes in the 18th and 19th Centuries () and A Concise History of Bolivia (, 2d ed ).
