Who Was Johnny Appleseed?

John Chapman was an eccentric frontier nurseryman who established orchards throughout the American Midwest. He became the basis of the folk hero Johnny Appleseed, who has been the subject of countless stories, movies and works of art.

Early Life

John Chapman, better known as Johnny Appleseed, was born in Leominster, Massachusetts, on September 26, His father, Nathaniel Chapman, fought as a minuteman at the Battle of Concord, and later served in the Continental Army under General George Washington. In July , while her husband was at war, Elizabeth Chapman died in childbirth. Nathaniel returned home and remarried shortly thereafter. He and his new wife, Lucy Cooley, had a total of 10 children together.

A limited amount is known about Chapman's early life. He may have traveled west to Ohio with his brother initially, meeting up with the rest of his family in It is likely that Nathaniel, a farmer, encouraged his son to become an orchardist, setting him up with an apprenticeship in this area. Personal reaction
This historical fiction book tells the story of Johnny Appleseed. I enjoyed the illustrations they used in this book. I thought they were engaging and a good addition to help the reader follow the historical context. It made the story more interesting rather than just facts about history.
Purpose in classroom
I would use this book to describe a historical fiction genre. This book contains actual historical claims about John Chapman however the dialogue is fictional because nobody really knows what he said. I would recommend this book to second through fifth graders. There are a few tricky vocabulary words such as “mosquitoes” and “orchard”. However there are illustrations every other page that helps the children visualize that the author is talking about. Literary elements that would be taught would be characterization. I would have the students describe the characteristics on John Chapman. For example I would want them to notice his tattered clothing, shoes and the way he helped people.

John Chapman co-authors the successful 'A Vested Interest' romantic technothriller series with his wife Shelia. Born in Newcastle on Tyne, England John lead a pretty boring early life. He lived in a Buddhist monastery, a civilized place with no electricity, no phone, no flush toilet, stone slab floors and a water supply which ran down a field in an open ditch. When he was sent to boarding school he accidentally set fire to it. He became a chemistry teacher but was frustrated by not being allowed to do all the interesting experiments. He changed to teaching computers in the early 80s and was delighted to find they would do exactly what they were told (unlike his pupils.) He met his wife Shelia in an Internet chat room in - see it does work sometimes! They had problems with UK and US immigration departments and spent three years as illegal immigrants in Canada where they earned a living designing web pages. That was followed by six years of teaching in London before returning to the North to pursue a career in writing. So what are the books about? The A Vested Interest series is based on the need for mankind to move outward from the Earth if we are to survive as a specie

John Chapman: The Man Who Was Johnny Appleseed (Rookie Biography)

From School Library Journal

Grade An easy-to-biography of the real person behind the popular folk legend. Greene often states, ``no one knows for sure'' and ``some say'' in separating the myths about Chapman from that which is actually known about his life. The brief text is clearly, if occasionally choppily, written in simple vocabulary, contains minimal fictionalization, yet conveys a good deal of information. The illustrations are an effective mixture of photographs, reproductions, and original paintings. This book provides more true biography than either Steven Kellogg's Johnny Appleseed (Morrow, ) or Aliki's The Story of Johnny Appleseed , (Prentice-Hall, ), although both of those titles are preferable for reading aloud. While obviously useful for reports, the book will also have an audience among recreational readers.
