Endre Roder
The life of Endre Roder in many respects reflects the turbulent history of Europe and of European art in his life time. It demonstrates clearly how art transcends both political ideologies and the various appalling “isms” of the last century
Endre was born in Budapest in but following his parent's marital breakdown found himself in Malta while he was still a toddler. Life was peaceful for a few years, far away from the convulsions which afflicted central Europe. This was rudely interrupted by the Second World War during which Malta was heavily bombed and Endre's education disrupted. He began to study art in Malta when he was in his teens after the war but the family moved to England in as his mother had remarried.
Things settled down again for a short time but world events in the shape of the Cold War and hence National Service intervened and so Endre was called up. After a short career in army Intelligence he was abruptly sent off to Egypt, possibly because his Hungarian connections were judged to be too risky for intelligence work during this period. After completing his secondary education at St Johns College in Portsmouth Endre completed his National Service in the army, serving in Egypt and Cyprus. In he trained as a cartographical draughtsman with the Ordnance Survey. Then in he studied architecture, before abandoning this to become an art student and qualifying in
Endre taught art in secondary schools, polytechnics and colleges of further education before being appointed Education Services Curator with Sheffield City Art Galleries. He left this position in to lecture in art history at Bretton Hall (South Yorkshire) where he taught up to post-graduate level. Since he has worked as a highly successful full-time painter.
Roder's paintings are highly distinctive and readily recognisable. Various influences are evident in his work including his Hungarian origins and early life in Malta. Endre draws upon his wide knowledge and fundamental understanding of art, to create careful compositions with his trademark use of colour and sense of decoration.

Endre Roder
Endre Roder was born in Budapest in, and his family moved shortly thereafter to Malta, where much of his childhood was spent. Since he has been resident in England and currently lives in Swanage.
Endre studied architecture and fine art before becoming a museum and art gallery curator. He also taught art and art history in secondary schools, colleges and universities where he gave seminars and master classes.
His work is distinctive and instantly recognisable, a valuable attribute few contemporary painters manage to achieve. Influences from his Hungarian origins and his early life in Malta are clearly visible in his work. His images draw upon his wide knowledge and fundamental understanding of art, a personal use of colour, a sense of decoration, and careful composition. Always figurative, his work can be from observation or imagination and mostly of female figures in wondrous interior or landscape settings. Detailed signatures in Endre's work such as a white horse, or white doves, make his work a collectors delight.
