Marie-Anne Paulze-Lavoisier was the wife of Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier (–), the figure known as the father of the chemical revolution. She was an active collaborator across the full range of her husband’s encyclopedic activities as chemist, financial administrator, and social reformer, but she especially exerted herself to help bring about the success and widespread diffusion of the chemical revolution.
Paulze-Lavoisier was born into the wealthy bourgeois class in As was customary at that time, she received her elementary education at a boarding school attached to a convent and was not given any education in science. Her father was a colleague of Lavoisier in the Ferme Général. Paulze-Lavoisier’s apprenticeship in science began in December , after she had married Lavoisier. Marie-Anne Pierrette Paulze Lavoisier was a French chemist and noble. She was the wife of Antoine Lavoisier and acted as his laboratory companion and contributed to his work.
Her father, Jacques Paulze, worked primarily as a parliamentary lawyer and financier. Most of his income came from running the Ferme Générale (the General Farm) which was a private consortium of financiers who paid the French monarchy for the privilege of collecting certain taxes. Her mother, Claudine Thoynet Paulze, died in , leaving behind not only Marie-Anne, then aged 3 only, but two other sons. After her mother’s death Paulze was placed in a convent where she received her formal education.

Marie-Anne Pierette Paulze, better known as Madame Lavoisier, was born Jan. 20, She was married to Antoine Lavoisier in , when she was just 12 years old; he was Lavoisier was soon appointed to a government post at the Arsenal and began his rise through the chemical ranks. Marie was his competent assistant in nearly all of his experiments; in addition, she provided the illustrations for most of his published works, including the revolutionary Traité élémentaire de chemie of (third image). Life was good for about twenty years, and then it got very bad. Lavoisier, because of his high government position in the tax agency Farmers General, was accused of being a traitor during the Reign of Terror in Marie did her best to defend her husband, pointing out--quite correctly--that Lavoisier was the greatest chemist that France had ever produced, but her efforts were of little use, and Lavoisier was guillotined on May 8, , on the same day that her father was also executed.
