His family migrated to Hackney, London, when he was four. While growing up in the bustling multicultural district Hackney, Ward witnessed seemingly harmless arguments turning into dangerous postcode rivalries. In an interview, he said,
I was too scared to go to those parts of London when I was growing up!… Especially back then – you knew south London wasn’t the place to be. I just didn’t wanna go there. Same with Hackney. Not for me.”
Later, during his teenage days, his family relocated to Romford, where he attended Chadwell Heath Academy. Ward first got interested in acting during his school days when he played the main antagonist Macduff in William Shakespeare’s tragedy ‘Macbeth.’ In an interview, he said,

After working as an Assistant Feature Film Editor in Los Angeles, Michael moved back to the San Francisco Bay Area and worked for many years at the commercial post production house Varitel Video. He worked his way up from Assistant Editor to Telecine Colorist and finally to Flame Compositor. In the early 's, Michael moved from the commercial industry back to the motion picture industry where he worked as a compositor utilizing various programs such as Flame, Shake, After Effects, and Nuke. During this time, Michael worked for numerous VFX companies such as Industrial Light + Magic, Sony Imageworks, Rhythm + Hues, Tippett Studio and The Orphanage, to name a few. Since , Michael has worked for Whiskytree as a Senior Artist, working on a wide variety of projects, including feature films, commercials, games, and virtual reality worlds.
