Early life Masefield was born in Ledbury, in Herefordshire, to George Masefield, a solicitor and Caroline. His mother died giving birth to his sister when Masefield was only 6 and he went to live with his aunt. His father died soon after. After an unhappy education at the King's School in Warwick (now known as Warwick School), where he was a boarder between and , he left to board the HMS Conway, both to train for a life at sea, and to break his addiction to reading, of which his Aunt thought little. He spent several years aboard this ship and found that he could spend much of his time reading and writing. It was aboard the Conway that Masefield’s love for story-telling grew. While on the ship, he listened to the stories told about sea lore. He continued to read, and felt that he was to become a writer and story teller himself. In , Masefield boarded the Gilcruix, destined for Chile, this first voyage bringing him the experience of sea sickness and a taste of fierce weather. An idyllically happy childhood was rudely interrupted by the death of his mother in , after which his father’s health broke down too. In the family became orphans and were taken in by a childless uncle and aunt, who he grew to loathe. These early experiences haunted Masefield and influenced his work throughout his life.

    Disregarding his love of reading, his family enrolled him at the age of 13 on the school-ship Conway to train for a career in the Navy. He qualified as a senior petty officer in and was apprenticed to a four-masted barque sailing from Cardiff to Iquique in Chile via Cape Horn.     John Masefield’s Life

    Masefield was born on 1st June, in Ledbury, Herefordshire, England. His mother died when he was only six years old. He lived with his aunt and father but later his father, who was a solicitor, died due to a mental breakdown. Masefield was not happy with his education at King’s School in Warwick, where he lived as a boarder and left to join the British naval ship HMS Conway to be trained at sea. He spent many years on the ship and spent a lot of time in reading and writing.

    During his time on HMS Conway, Masefield developed a passion for storytelling. In , on his first voyage, he went to Chile and experienced sea sickness. He recorded all his experiences about sailing and extreme weather conditions in his notebooks. The beauty of nature inspired him greatly.

    In , Masefield went to New York on board a large sailing ship – a windjammer. His strong desire to become a writer and his feeling of hopelessness in sailing overtook him and he decided to desert the ship. He remained a vagrant for many years. He did many jobs around New York including bar keeping and working in a carpet factory. During this time, he used to buy twenty books in a week
