Biography of Philosopher and Spanish Educator Miguel de Unamuno

He is also known as one of several writers of la generación del 98 (98’s generation).

Miguel de Unamuno y Jugo nació el 29 de septiembre de en Bilbao, ciudad que le vio nacer y en la que pasó su infancia y su adolescencia. Pero fue en Salamanca donde estableció su hogar, donde permaneció de forma ininterrumpida el resto de su vida &#;excepto en la época de su destierro&#;, y donde murió la tarde del último día del año , después de una intensa vida familiar, social, política, académica e intelectual.
Tres son las ciudades más influyentes en la vida de Don Miguel: Bilbao, Madrid y Salamanca. Esta ciudad castellana fue "más que un destino administrativo: fue un incesante y hondo descubrimiento de sí mismo, de sus posibilidades y también () de sus limitaciones"1. Unamuno encontraba un significado profundo, más allá de la pura apariencia, en los paisajes y en los lugares que visitó, que conoció y que plasmó en algunas de sus obras como Paisajes (), Por tierras de Portugal y España () o Andanzas y visiones españolas (). El Instituto de Enseñanza Secundaria Miguel de Unamuno es el instituto histórico de Bilbao, en donde se han formado muchísimos bilbaínos y vizcaínos desde , año en que nació en el Casco Viejo con el nombre de “Instituto Vizcaino de Primera Enseñanza”. Era “El Insti”, y más tarde, cuando fueron creándose otros, “El Central”, algo así como el instituto por antonomasia de Bilbao. Han estudiado en él muchos que llegaron a ser personalidades ilustres en diferentes áreas del saber y de la vida social y política. Permítasenos citar sólo a Miguel de Unamuno, con cuyo nombre se honra el propio Instituto en la actualidad. También puede ufanarse el Instituto por haber creado en la primera cátedra de Euskera de la historia, que la ocupó Resurrección Mª de Azkue, antiguo alumno y, más tarde, fundador y presidente de la Academia de la Lengua Vasca, Euskaltzaindia.
