Synopsis
It tells the story of Jess Bhamra, a British Indian girl living in London, who dreams of playing football professionally, much to the dismay of her traditional Sikh family.
Despite the cultural and familial pressures, Jess pursues her passion with the support of her friend Jules, navigating conflicts between tradition and ambition, and identity and love.
The musical celebrates the fusion of cultures, the challenge of integrating traditional values with modern dreams, and the universal story of friendship, family, and following ones dreams against all odds.

What appears, at first glance, an unusual choice for a musical proves a joyous celebration of culture, identity and acceptance.
The timing of the original hit movie Bend It Like Beckham () was at the cusp of an explosion in women’s soccer, with numbers soaring from thousands to nearly two million women and girls now playing the sport across Britain. Chadha also repeats her directing credit, showing herself completely fluent in music theatre language with a pair of climactic numbers (one in each act) in which characters and locations share the stage in abstract but completely clear dimensions.

Gurinder Chadha’s and Paul Mayeda Berges’ fable, of a British-Asian teenage girl longing to play football rather than cook dhal and live traditionally, was beloved on screen but emerges all the stronger for being driven by Howard Goodall’s music and Charles Hart’s lyrics. It’s a lovely show, with the rare quality in musicals of feeling all-of-a-piece: one solid creation by a team who understand one another and were al
